Hi:
I travel to Mexico with a dozen or so other motorhomes. We eat lunch and
dinner outside picnic style with each participant bringing food for all to
share. The minute we uncover the food we are attached by flies. What do
you suggest we do to cut down on the amount of flies. We have tried screen
rooms, fans blowing across the table top, candles nothing seems to work
well. I read somewhere that whole Cloves may work. appreciate your input

I found this site yesterday searching for help with house flies. I read
all these posts and then saw the RED text about where to ask a question.
Went to the right paqe, posted my question, and I think it was 2 1/2 hours
later Rick had sent me an answer. I've sent several follow up questions
and continue to receive replies within a matter of hours. And he's not
trying to sell me anything! Wish there were more sites/people like Rick
out there! I'm telling everyone about this site for any help with pests!
Rick is the best!

My wife and I have a camper set up permanently in a campground. We have had
it for about 10 years and we do our best to keep it clean and leave no food
around for bugs and critters to enjoy. We have never really had any bug or
rodent problem until this past Sunday (7/18/10). We noticed a half dozen
houseflies in the camper in the afternoon about the time we were getting
ready to head to our regular home. We killed them and left. Monday (I am
retired) when I returned to the camper I found close to 100 flies in all
bright areas. They were so thick that I used a hand vac to suck most of
them up. My wife told me that they were probably coming in the hole in the
screen door near the handle (I had let it go for a few years due to
laziness). I took the door off and dropped at my local hardware store. I
returned to the camper on Tuesday (7/20/10) and at first just noticed some
dead bodies around and I walked all thru the camper. About 3 hours later
there were flies everywhere again. I put up several of the sticky paper
things to catch them and on the way home I bought some foggers. I just
can't see how they are getting in and I have opened every cabinet and
access panel. I have sprayed with Ortho max inside and outside and I don't
know what to do next. I haven't used the bombs and really don't want to but
see no other alternative.
What can I do to get rid of these flies?

Great number of flies hatch during the hottest part of summer season. After
emerging, they prefer to live in cool areas. Dark areas are not conducive
to fly infestations.
•Eliminate all the sources that might cause fly infestations in your house.
•Immediately remove garbage and rotting materials
•Cover or dispose of all unused edible items
•Decaying organic materials create odors that arract flies.
•Do not keep any sweet item and meat open in the air.
•Immediately soak or wash utensils used in preparing meat, eggs and sweets.
•Place unused food in polythene bags to prevent flies access.
•Tightly close trash cans.
•Remove pet bowl and plates and wash them just after serving food.
•Animal waste and pet feces cause fly breeding. Collect and dump excrement.

Get the flies identified. Knowing the exact species will help you learn
where they are breeding and that will lead to their control.

I have flies that continually fly around in a circle but don't ever land. I
cannot kill them because they don't stop flying! I want to purchase the fly
control kit but I don't know if it will work if these pests don't ever
land. Also, they always fly in a circle under my patio next to the sliding
glass door. I tried to investigate which flies these were and I couldn't
find out. Any ideas how to get rid of them?

The fly control kit is for house flies. You must identify the fly species
you are trying to control before spending money on pesticides and
equipment. Collect a fly or two and take the samples to any local pest
control company for a free ID. Then I'll help you work on a control plan.

How to get rid of these circling flys that never land?
I have 3 areas, front door and 2 areas of my patio they keep circling all day long. I'm frustrated, and embarrassed because everything is clean around here.
I honestly don't know what the attraction is for them. My neighbors are complaining they have them also. Please help with any ideas!!!

I live in Arizona. We have a a covered patio the length of house. We have a
few wooden patio chairs and a small BBQ on the patio. outside the covered
patio we have grass and rock landscaping. On daily basis the morning
starts out with a few flies and they grow in numbers as the day goes on to
end up with what seems like a thousand flies swarming the patio. We have a
bug guy that sprays our house and the entire back yard. we have tried
sprays, hanging fly traps, and scented candles. I have even spray down the
entire patio and house with the hose. I have even spent hour out there with
a fly swatter and it seems for every one I kill two more apear. My wife and
I are at our wits end and cant stand to even open the door to use our back
yard. Please help with any ides.

Your "bug guy" is not doing his job if he has failed to tell you the
species of the flies. Are they house flies? Bottle flies? Deer flies? Face
flies? You can't tell the players without a program. Get the flies properly
identified and you'll quickly learn where they are breeding and how to
eliminate them.

Okay! Now, follow the list of suggested breeding places mentioned in a
response to another comment above. Somehow, you are missing an area that is
attractive to the flies. Don't forget inside the garbage can. Put outdoor
garbage cans on bricks to allow air to circulate under the cans. Check door
thresholds to be sure the track is not collecting dirt from shoes.

Double Hung Windows

I had a screen on a double hung window on the second story of my 1913 built
craftsman home. Tonight when I went to remove the screen flies seemed to
be coming from the groove where the window slides up and down. I know that
there are weights etc. behind the wall where they are coming out of. I must
have sucked up 20-30 flies with my vacuum. Tomorrow I will see if there
are more. Is there anything that you can think of an experience? What are
some steps that I should take to alleviate the problem. Thank you so much
for your suggestions!

Flies can breed in the most unexpected places. However, they need to lay
their eggs in moist, decaying matter. I don't know if your flies are
breeding in the wall or at the base of the window track. You'll just have
to look closely to make that determination. I recommend using a wonderful
product called Maxforce Fly Spot. You can spray it in the window grove and
flies coming in contact with the product will die in 30 seconds. Here's a
link to the product:

We have dung flies and house flies in our pre-school. We also have two
guinea pigs. The flies have gotten really bad. We have moved the guinea
pigs out for now and will let the flies die out. What is the best product
for controlling the flies, assuming the source of breeding is identified.
Kids leave the doors open all the time. Should I get the Maxforce or the
granules in the trap? we obviously cant use pesticides where the kids can
get them. Thanks

We live in a small rowhome. Over the past year, we are getting flies that
appear "out of thin air" on the middle floor where our
living/dining/kitchen area is. No windows or doors are open. To provide
some background, we have a finished basement with tile floor. And the same
happens there but moreso. We had Orkin come in; they charge us $71 every
two months. They installed a fly strip and yes we accumulated flies on the
strip. However, we still have the flies. We keep the door closed to the
basement, but to no avail; they still appear out of nowhere. Any
suggestions/recommendations? Thank you -- this is a fantastic website.

The Orkin man should have properly identified the fly species. Catching
flies on a fly strip just confirms you have flies, but knowing the species
will tell you where they breed. That, at least, gives you a starting point
as to where to consider treatment. If they are small flies they could be
breeding under the basement tile floor. If they are larger flies they could
be breeding on certain types of shrubs outside, then finding their way
inside via a vent. The possibilities are endless.

We have really large black flies in our house, they are slow moving and
seem to congregate around the windows, front doors, and in our utility
room. I only see one at a time but have killed about 10 today. Our
exterminator (who was just out here recently but the problem started 2 days
ago) told us over the phone that something probably died in the walls (we
didn't smell anything in the last couple of weeks, and looked in the
utility room/crawlspace area and saw nothing) and that we should just wait
two days and the flies will stop coming. Is this good advice? I'm worried
things are going to get worse...

It could be cluster flies at this time of year. They would be migrating in
from the outside, looking for places to over-winter. You need to get a
proper ID. If your exterminator does not know to do this, find a new
exterminator. Usually, bottle flies, which feed on dead animals, appear to
be shiny blue or green. The cluster flies often get into attic spaces. I
like the Nuvan ProStrips for this situation. They are available on this
website. Click on "Pest Control Products" at the top of the page.
