House Sparrows

Once upon a time you looked out your window and admired that cute little sparrow chirping at nothing in particular. Then, a few weeks later you noticed several other sparrows had joined the first and you were still enjoying their joyful song.

Now, less than a year later, the House sparrows have seemingly taken over the trees surrounding your property and signs of their nests protrude from siding, gutters and every other available crack and crevice of your house or commercial building.

House sparrows are prolific nest builders that never are satisfied with the size of

their bird accommodations. It is not uncommon to hear of people attempting to remove a sparrow nest only to discover that a whole box of thirty-five gallon garbage can liners is needed to cart off the nesting materials. It’s the classic story of the tenant who moves into a one bedroom apartment, then invites his five bothers, four aunts and uncles and seven cousins to “share” the rent. Sparrows know no limits when it comes to growing their family “circle.”

If you try to remove the sparrow's nest on your own we suggest wearing a dust mask, protective goggles and disposable latex gloves to protect yourself from the many organisims known to exist in bird excrement.

If you want to really get into the job try filling in the cracks where the birds are gaining entry using 19 gauge hardware cloth. You can buy a roll of the stuff at Home Depot or Lowes for around eight bucks. Don't forget to buy tin snips to cut the hardware cloth.

So, heads up when you notice house sparrow activity in locations where sparrows are not welcome. Seal up the cracks or call a pest control professional for advice.
