Bed Bug Mattress Covers

Summary: Bed bug mattress covers have very tightly woven fabrics that keep bed bugs from finding hiding places. Bed bug mattress covers can also trap bed bugs inside the cover if the bed bugs have already been discovered on or in the mattress.

Many bed bug treatments have been performed since these pests have made such a strong come-back. Every time a pest control professional gets into the treatment he finds himself having to tell the homeowner that the stuffed sofa or the lounge chair must go. With much hesitation on the homeowner's part, the infested furniture finds its way to the curb. Often times the homeowner also finds it necessary to toss out the mattress and box spring, as well. But, this is not always necessary as there are ways to salvage some furniture. It simply takes a little research.

In the case of bedding there are some well documented steps you can take before relegating your cozy mattress to the garbage heap. Several retail chain stores like Bed Bath & Beyond carry mattress covers and box spring covers. Here is where it gets a bit tricky. A vinyl box spring cover is fine, but most of us don't want to sleep on a plastic coated mattress cover. That makes for hot, sticky summer nights, for sure. What you need is a cotton hypo-allergenic zippered mattress cover with a tread count in the 300 range, and that could be expensive.

So, consider all the variables. If your mattress is fairly new and fairly expensive, you may want to high-tail it down to the linen store for a good hypo-allergenic mattress cover. Zip it closed and keep it closed for a year or more. (Bed bugs will eventually die inside the case, but it can take over a year for this to happen.) If your mattress is well worn and especially if it has tears in the fabric, take it to the curb.

One additional note to consider. If you are throwing out furniture or bedding, be sure to make it unuseable by ripping it open with a utility knife. You don't want some poor, unfortunate person picking it up thinking they have found a real treasure.

You can find anything from very cheap mattress covers to very expensive. Just go on line and do a search. The more expensive covers are going to be more comfortable to sleep on.

The mattress cover does not prevent the return of bed bugs. The cover only locks in the bed bugs that may be present in or on an infested mattress. The cover makes it so you do not have to discard your mattress, but it does nothing to stop bed bugs breeding in walls or behind baseboards. Get it?

It's not labeled for bed bugs, but it might work.

I understand that the mattress cover kills bed bugs within the bed, but is the box spring cover necessary? And if I do not use the box spring cover can bed bugs potentially crawl up and bite me even if i have a mattress cover?

A mattress cover does not kill bed bugs. It simply contains any bed bugs that have made a home of your mattress. Covering the box spring is even more essential than covering the mattress. The box spring provides interior spaces for hiding bed bugs. There are sprays that can easily treat a mattress, but box springs are more difficult to treat successfully.

I have a mattress cover and box spring cover already on my bed and box spring. An exterminator is coming tomorrow - do I need to take the covers off so that my bed can be exterminated, then put them back on afterward?
